Malaysia’s Power Thefts Linked to Illegal Crypto Mining Surge 300% Since 2018
Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), Malaysia’s primary electricity provider, reports a 300% increase in power thefts tied to illegal cryptocurrency mining operations between 2018 and 2024. The utility attributes the spike to rising global crypto activity.
Joint operations with law enforcement uncovered 2,397 cases this year, up from just 610 six years ago. "Nationwide raids have successfully dismantled illicit mining setups," TNB stated, emphasizing these efforts protect grid stability.
